This 2011, the World Wildlife Foundation, WWF (World Wildlife Fund) will hold its L Anniversary as a leader in global conservation.
When established in 1961, however, the WWF was little known and its founders had a difficult task ahead. To raise sufficient funds for the conservation of the species had to combine public engagement around the need to conserve nature and protect endangered species.
Fortunately, the founders quickly confirmed the extent to which species these might be the best ambassadors for the cause. In 1961, Chi-Chi, the first pandagiant living in the west, was the feeling in the London Zoo, with a high coverage of the media and broke the record for attracting crowds. At the same time, China was considered by many as a distant and inscrutable threat, but due to his confinement in the zoo, Chi-Chi attracted people began to discover and worry about the amazing species of the world. With that inspiration, Gerald Watterson, environmentalist and artist, drew several sketches of pandas from which Sir Peter Scott, founder of the WWF, took the first known version of the logo in the world today.
As the WWF's work has evolved from its initial vision of funding for conservation of species auNo complex global effort to protect species, sites and people who share the first draft of the panda has become an international symbol of conservation, both for present and for the future.
